A.D.I.D.A.S. – All Day I Dream About Socks

20 Oct

So I opened up a package recently – am I the only one who gets super excited when they get a package in the mail, even if you know what it is? – and they were socks that I had recently ordered. I absolutely love socks; in fact, I adore leg-wear in general (minus pants). While they socks are a real hassle to put on sometimes, making flip-flops and flats oh so convenient, you can’t deny how amazing a great pair of socks feel – unless they’re slipping off your feet, which really bites. Ugh.

One thing I love about autumn is that it’s the perfect time for leggings, tights and socks. Some days are warm enough to wear knee socks with a cute skirt, but if you want to bundle up, there’s always woolen stockings, too.

These toasty knee-socks are from Sockdreams, this amazing little sock boutique I recently found out about. They have a large selection of socks at all different lengths. Best part? Free shipping within the continental US! You don’t need to tell me twice. I had originally planned on wearing them with black flats, but that got way too boring. Pink it is!

Also from Sockdreams, these are thigh-high (!) socks. I found that they didn’t quite stretch over my thighs, but I prefer the scrunched look anyway. One of my friends suggested I wear them with my gold Air Forces. While I am still wearing the skirt from the previous photo (contrary to popular belief, apparently) it didn’t quite fit with the outfit as an actual look. Oh well – I can always try again later. Lastly, I do not care what anyone says, those forces are boss. I feel like a Solid Gold Globetrotter.

And finally – my beloved tie-dye tights from We Love Colors! This photo does not do the bright colors justice – I’ll have to take more when I actually figure out how to wear these things in public. I feel like pairing any color with these intense tights is a recipe for disaster, so my only options are white or black. Unfortunately for me, I actually…don’t own many clothes in those colors. At all. Not a single dress or skirt. Oh well, I guess I’ll have to go Little Black Dress shopping!

One of the great things about socks and tights is that they’re extremely versatile. You could pair dark tights under tweed or wool shorts to bring summer into autumn (but do it quickly, before it gets too cold!), you could pair almost any color legwear with neutral boots and outerwear – a black overcoat is a blank canvas! You could try calf-high socks with a cute pair of strappy heels and a skirt – though I would suggest going high or flat with your shoes, kitten heels just look funny, in my opinion. Of course, the classic is pairing your legwear with a slinky dress and an understated boot. When it gets ultra-cold, wear them under your jeans for more layering.

How do you wear your socks? I’d love to hear your comments – especially considering that I’m a little stumped about my closet, as you can see.

You may or may not know – but I love colors. On my walls, my clothes, my nails – even in my hair sometimes. While I appreciate for earth tones and neutrals as well, they aren’t my normal thing. When I heard about a leg wear company that supposedly shared the same chromatic obsession that I did, well – it tickled me pink!

Horrible puns aside, I have made a few purchases from We Love Colors, and every single one has left a satisfied customer. They have a wide choice that pleases even the rabid color enthusiast that I am and more that I had never thought of! (Tie-Dye tights? Who thinks of these things?) I actually own the tights that are pictured above, but the main reason I haven’t worn them yet is because I don’t own a neutral (read: black) skirt or dress to pair them with. Mark my words, I will remedy this some day. Pictured below is the next purchase on my to-do list, provided that I figure out what exactly I could wear with them…a white dress maybe? But what would I put on my feet that wouldn’t look strange?

Anyhow, while their Splash Color (read: Tie-Dye) leggings are a bit expensive ($29.00 for leggings seems a bit steep for me considering my broke college student budget, plus the mere existence of stores like Forever 21), I was quite pleased with their mid-range nylon/lycra blend tights. (They have regular tights as well as a slightly more expensive – and thicker – microblend line of tights) When they came in the mail I was expecting a texture and thickness similar to my mother’s pantyhose, but I was pleasantly surprised – they’re thick, think thin leggings thick – minimally opaque and seem to be pretty run-resistant. The regular tights are more like average pantyhose material, but I got them in knee-highs and they satisfied me as well.

While the styles I posted are a bit of a fashion risk, they stock tons of styles in a variety of solid colors as well. Plus, they stock many different sizes, so almost anyone can partake in the legwear love. If you’re looking for outfit inspiration you can check out their official blog that shows user-submitted photos of real women rocking their We Love Colors tights. Once I have an outfit in mind, I’ll probably be submitting photos as well!

What do you think? Let me know in the comments!

Have you ever heard of NaKIMuli, the fantastic clothing company by designer Tennille McMillan? Well, if you don’t know, you’re about to find out. Her fashion line has captivated me ever since I saw her distinctive holographic dress, an item that I am dying to have in my closet to this very day. The bright colors and African-inspired prints are to die for, and the creative construction makes every piece of clothing extremely different.

The Afrikan Hologram dress. From this moment, I was in love. You can clearly see her creative vision on her tumblr, where she sometimes posts personal pictures of her day-to-day life – it’s clear that her eye for outrageous fashion extends beyond the runway.

Can I just say that I really, really, REALLY want this cape (in purple, preferably) in my life? I already have the perfect belt. I also want to say that this comment that was posted on the page made me incredibly happy:

are you joking? this is fucking fabulous AMAZING and i want it, and i am almost upset that such a perfect cocoon exists and it is not mine, i want to live in that. holy poop! go to this website this lady’s clothes make me feel really happy about being brown and curvy and that is not normally how i feel when i am looking at clothes on the internet. love, shanay.

I feel like she expresses my thoughts exactly. I want a perfect cocoon, too!

From the brand’s official tumblr page:

Clothing, both the classical and the innovative, is fueled by imagination. naKIMuli aims to go beyond the traditions of women’s fashion and explore more of the imagination, what could be rather than what should be. The world we live in often dictates what we should wear and creates millions of it. We at naKIMuli want to create a fashion revolution: replace the cookie cutter model with one that embraces individuality, comfort, and fun. Become your own trendsetter. Dream. Explore. Dare.

All of these images are from the official Nakimuli tumblr, where I strongly suggest you go if you like what you see here.

What do you think? Are there any other brands setting the fashion world on fire? Let me know!

Kisses Never Taste So Sweet – A Review of FSL Cosmetics’ Lipgloss

23 Mar

FSL Cosmetics

If you know me, you would know that I’m no makeup expert. The best I can hope for is a relatively straight line of eyeliner with a decent application of eyeshadow – and that is only on my good days.

But the one thing I know well?

Being a tired, frazzled, makeup-clueless college student, chapstick and lipgloss have become the most essential component of my make-up arsenal. I know how lovely that shimmering coat of gloss look on your lips as well as how annoying it can be when the wind blows your hair into your face and it sticks to your mouth, leaving you in the awkward position of spitting your hair out and dealing with sticky ends for the next few hours.

So along comes FSL Cosmetics, sent my way due to a contest held at the Style and Beauty Doctor. The story behind the lipgloss was tantalizing.

The creator of the brand, Kimberly Riley has a bachelors in Chemical Engineering with double minors in Chemistry and Engineering and was heavily involved in the creation of her cosmetics. All the lipglosses are hypoallergenic, consist of a vitamin-rich, antioxidant-potent formula that is healthy and nourishing for your lips. They are also 100% free of parabens, phthalates, sulfates, GMOs (generally modified organisms), nut oil, gluten, and talc. They don’t test on animals and the lip gloss containers are 100% recyclable. With Earth Day coming up, this isn’t a moment too soon!

After all of that, I was dying to try this lipgloss. The verdict?

Here is the lipgloss when I first put it on. Because of the sunlight, it's a bit hard to see.

I am amazed. No really – I am. It is everything I could have ever wanted in a lipgloss. Unlike most lipglosses, which are sticky, it’s a light, smooth feeling that rolls right on – and stays! It’s fantastic. Also, it lasted an incredibly long time – hours – and even survived lunch. Even better is the scent – it smells like brownies! What more can you ask for? I also like the color a lot – while it appears to be sheer on me, that’s partly because of the camera flash (the pigment is much stronger in person) and also because I used a minimal amount (a hint of color is all I usually tend to strive for). One or two coats later and your lips will be golden, baby!

I loaned it to a friend to briefly try, and her reaction to my enthusiasm was ambivalence – she’s much more of a makeup expert than I am, so she is much harder to impress. In her opinion, my shining review was probably due to inexperience.

After lunch. I had to reapply a bit at this point, but it was still there, which is impressive.

After using the lipgloss, she stood in stunned silence and could only utter, “I am …impressed.” Enough said. But seriously, this is the most fantastic lipgloss I have ever used, hands down. Definitely recommended!

"Give me sullen." This is the lipgloss later on that evening. As you can see, the color is still there.

You can buy your own lipgloss (or lipstick) at FSL Cosmetics. You can also find them on Twitter. The creator of the company (as mentioned above) is just about the coolest woman ever, so make sure to follow her and say hi!
